Trees

This is our new urban arboretum page

The word arboretum comes from the Latin word ‘arbor’ (a tree) forming the word arboretum (a place with trees) and the word urban meaning “in, relating to, or characteristic of” a town or city.  Putting the two together we get a meaning for the word urban arboretum, a city or town with a place for trees.  “Arboretum: a place where trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants are cultivated for scientific and educational purposes.  In Lewes in the UK, one of the earliest urban arboretums was established where the objectives were that trees are “cultivated, studied, appreciated, and enjoyed for their educational, tourism, amenity and environmental value”

This is the link to the survey information i have gathered from all the street trees of Sandymount, link hereto the survey results.

Using the information gathered in carrying out the survey, each tree will be given a QR code this can be scanned by a mobile device and the information gathered in the survey about that tree can be viewed by the user.  The information can then be up dated as the dynamic of the arboretum changes.

Why and what are the benefits and the challenges of establishing an urban arboretum?? The urban arboretum idea is a very recent concept and has not gotten widespread acceptance.  None have been established to date in the Republic of Ireland.  By highlighting the trees that are growing locally in the urban setting and by documenting these, this information will contribute to setting up a template for the first urban arboretum in Ireland.

Most people just see the everyday street tree, but if people took the time to look a little deeper at the variety of interesting trees in gardens and otherpublic or private spaces, they would become more supportive of establishing urban arboretums in their respective urban area
